Communication is an essential part of human interaction. Aphasia is an acquired speech disorder
that disrupts communication, and depending on the type, it can affect reading, writing and even speech
comprehension. With the help of technology, patients suffering from this condition can have an easy
and reliable way to complement their therapy. Currently there are two different prototypes available in
Portuguese medium, which will be used as a baseline for this project. They already include a raw im-
plementation of the required functionalities, however, they will need to be re-engineered to comply with
current trends of software architectures and also suit today’s mobile user experience. The objective of
this project is to build an Android mobile application for patients with aphasia (the target audience would
be composed mainly by elderly people), so the application developed is user-friendly, responsive, and
adaptable to different screen sizes.
== Abstract ==

In order to develop computer tools for speech therapy that reliably classify speech
productions, there is a need for speech production corpora that characterize the target population in
terms of age, gender, and native language. Apart from including correct speech productions, in order
to characterize the target population, the corpora should also include samples from people with
speech sound disorders. In addition, the annotation of the data should include information on the
correctness of the speech productions. Following these criteria, we collected a corpus that can be used
to develop computer tools for speech and language therapy of Portuguese children with sigmatism.
The proposed corpus contains European Portuguese children’s word productions in which the words
have sibilant consonants. The corpus has productions from 356 children from 5 to 9 years of age.
Some important characteristics of this corpus, that are relevant to speech and language therapy and
computer science research, are that (1) the corpus includes data from children with speech sound
disorders; and (2) the productions were annotated according to the criteria of speech and language
pathologists, and have information about the speech production errors. These are relevant features
for the development and assessment of speech processing tools for speech therapy of Portuguese
children. In addition, as an illustration on how to use the corpus, we present three speech therapy
games that use a convolutional neural network sibilants classifier trained with data from this corpus
and a word recognition module trained on additional children data and calibrated and evaluated
with the collected corpus.
Software for the production of sign languages is much less common than for spoken languages. Such software usually relies on 3D
humanoid avatars to produce signs which, inevitably, necessitates the use of animation. One barrier to the use of popular animation
tools is their complexity and steep learning curve, which can be hard to master for inexperienced users. Here, we present PE2LGP,
an authoring system that features a 3D avatar that signs Portuguese Sign Language. Our Animator is designed specifically to craft
sign language animations using a key frame method, and is meant to be easy to use and learn to users without animation skills. We
conducted a preliminary evaluation of the Animator, where we animated seven Portuguese Sign Language sentences and asked four sign
language users to evaluate their quality. This evaluation revealed that the system, in spite of its simplicity, is indeed capable of producing
comprehensible messages

== Abstract ==
Current Computer Assisted Language Learning
(CALL) tools, which have largely remained unchanged over the
past few years, are often inadequate for attaining fluency in a
second language. The goal of this work was to build a CALL tool
based on bilingual eBooks, following the EPUB3 format. The tool
should have an intuitive user interface, include word definitions,
and also incorporate a set of serious games.

The project comprised the development of a Python script
which took the parallel texts in both languages and pre-recorded
audio in the target language and merged them into a single
structured eBook document, complete with dynamic features.
These features offer the user an improved control over the audio
playback, and are not included by default in the target platform,
Apple’s iPad in this work. The script also retrieves dictionary
definitions for every word in the eBook and includes them in
the final document. Additionally, the project also comprised the
development of a Javascript application that implements the
serious games without relying on online external resources.

A preliminary user study was conducted with a demonstration
eBook generated by this system in order to improve its features
and understand the expectations users would have for the
eBook. Although positive feedback reassures the usefulness of this
application, the demand for features that require deeper analysis
of the dual language book raises concerns over the viability of
the chosen reading platform, Apple’s ibooks application, and the
EPUB3 format versus implementing the solution as a standalone
mobile application.
Unbabel Talk is a speech-to-speech translation application that
provides human certified translations for voice instant messaging (IM)
in multilingual scenarios. By combining Unbabel’s translation pipeline
with state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition (ASR) and
text-to-speech (TTS) models, Unbabel Talk can be used to send
a voice message in a language of
choice through popular messaging platforms. The app further
ensures that translations have high quality, either by certifying them
through Unbabel’s own quality estimation (QE) tool
and/or through Unbabel’s community of translators. There are
two versions of the app. On version 1, the app synthesizes audio
that can be delivered with male or female standard voices. Version 2
has features that are currently being developed, such as
voice morphing and transcription correction through Unbabel’s
community.
The prevalence of diseases like Dementia is increasing world-
wide due to the increase of average lifespan, and consequently, of elderly
population. With no cure for dementia, there is a big focus on its early
detection, as well as on cognitive stimulation which aims to delay the
loss of cognitive abilities. However, there are not yet many technological
solutions that allow elders to undergo cognitive stimulation exercises in
a group context. This work aims to develop a multiplayer game for European
Portuguese to be applied in the context of cognitive stimulation.
The game, based on the format of a quiz, serves as a platform for elders to
exercise their memory competing with each other, and thus, promoting
social interaction which is of major importance for cognitive stimulation.
To this end, the game incorporates a virtual gameshow host and speech
and language technologies allowing for natural voice interactions. The
preliminary results of the user satisfaction survey were generally positive.
In particular, the multiplayer component was well received, reinforcing
the potential of this type of system.
Hearing loss is a frequent problem in society. There are a number of causes that condition hearing
loss in different age groups and have a negative impact on people’s daily lives. This thesis aims to
raise awareness for hearing loss in the third age through a virtual reality simulator. For this, a basic
understanding of hearing and the associated perceptual processes are given. Hearing loss associated
with age, presbycusis, is described in several dimensions (physiological, social and its prevalence). Later,
two auditory models, MAP and CASP and two software development kits (SDKs) - Resonance Audio and
Oculus Audio - were analyzed, as well as two auditory simulators - Starkey and NIOSH - in which the
simulator was inspired. Through the use of two softwares, Blender together with Unity, a virtual reality
deafness simulator was developed aiming specifically to the hearing impairment in the elderly where the
user is stading in a restaurant with noisy conditions with freedom of movement. Qualitative tests of the
simulator were carried out through a questionnaire with questions that could be answered on the Likert
scale. The results show a strong incentive regarding the use of virtual reality to approach the hearing loss
for a specific age group as well as the understanding of the difficulties exhibited in noisy environments.

Unbabel Talk is a speech-to-speech translation application that
provides human certified translations for voice instant mes-
saging (IM) in multilingual scenarios. By combining Unba-
bel’s translation pipeline with state-of-the-art automatic speech
recognition (ASR) and text-to-speech (TTS) models, Unbabel
Talk can be used to send a voice message in a language of
choice through popular messaging platforms. The app further
ensures that translations have high quality, either by certify-
ing them through Unbabel’s own quality estimation (QE) tool
and/or through Unbabel’s community of translators. There are
two versions of the app. On version 1, the app synthesizes audio
that can be delivered with male or female standard voices. Ver-
sion 2 has features that are currently being developed, such as
voice morphing and transcription correction through Unbabel’s

This work aims to develop a multiplayer game for Eu-
ropean Portuguese to be applied in the context of cognitive stimulation.
== Abstract ==

== Abstract ==

These are relevant features
for the development and assessment of speech processing tools for speech therapy of Portuguese
children. In addition, as an illustration on how to use the corpus, we present three speech therapy
games that use a convolutional neural network sibilants classifier trained with data from this corpus
and a word recognition module trained on additional children data and calibrated and evaluated
with the collected corpus.
that disrupts communication, and depending on the type, it can affect reading, writing and even speech
comprehension.

== Abstract ==

This work aims to develop a multiplayer game for Eu-
ropean Portuguese to be applied in the context of cognitive stimulation.

Ver-
sion 2 has features that are currently being developed, such as
voice morphing and transcription correction through Unbabel’s
community.
ropean Portuguese to be applied in the context of cognitive stimulation.
The game, based on the format of a quiz, serves as a platform for elders to
exercise their memory competing with each other, and thus, promoting
social interaction which is of major importance for cognitive stimulation.
