For over 25 years, he has been teaching courses on circuit theory, signal theory, signal processing and speech processing to Electrical Engineering, Computer Science and Aerospace Engineering students. From 1991 through 1993, he worked at AT&amp;T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey on modelling and analysis of the glottal flow and its applications to text-to-speech synthesis. He is currently a senior researcher in the Spoken Language Systems Laboratory of [http://www.inesc-id.pt/ INESC-ID], and his research interests include speech synthesis, automatic multi-level speech annotation, voice source modelling, emotional speech synthesis and alternative and augmentative communication. É esta onda de pressão que é responsável pela estimulação do tracto oral que resulta na produção do sinal de fala. Dada a supremacia da fala como meio de comunicação entre humanos, as patologias associadas às cordas vocais para além de produzir uma diminuição da qualidade de vida podem limitar o exercício de profissões tais como as de professores, cantores, locutores e de outros profissionais. O diagnóstico precoce destas patologias pode evitar a irrecuperabilidade dos danos, mas a sua a análise e identificação exige a realização de exames laringológicos efectuados por especialistas competentes e com equipamento adequado. <br /> <br /> == Descrição ==<br /> <br /> O desenvolvimento das tecnologias de processamento da fala tem conduzido ao desenvolvimento de ferramentas de análise cada vez mais sofisticadas e rigorosas na determinação dos principais parâmetros acústicos.<br /> Um dos desenvolvimentos mais relevantes neste sentido é o da estimação da forma da fonte sonora a partir do sinal de fala captado com um microfone de boa qualidade e em condições acústicas aceitáveis. Com uma boa estimativa deste sinal é possível obter medições que anteriormente só eram possíveis utilizando um laringoscópio e métodos de iluminação que permitissem determinar os modos de vibração das cordas vocais. Este trabalho relaciona-se com o primeiro tema.<br /> <br /> == Descrição ==<br /> <br /> Um dos resultados do projecto eCIRCUS é a aplicação FearNot! que procura ajudar a combater o bullying nas escolas.<br /> <br /> O fenómeno de bullying é a opressão física ou psicológica realizada por uma pessoa mais forte sobre outra mais fraca. Apesar de ocorrer ao longo da vida, é na escola que se torna mais notório face à dificuldade de muitas vítimas em lidar com ele, resultando em danos psicológicos profundos que chegam a conduzir ao suicídio. As vítimas são em geral crianças com dificuldades de socialização ou de alguma forma diferentes da maioria.<br /> <br /> Nesta aplicação dirigida a crianças dos 8 aos 12 anos, o utilizador assume o papel de amigo invisível da vítima, assistindo à interacção das personagens virtuais no ambiente escolar e aconselhado a vítima sobre a melhor forma de lidar com o bully. A vítima procura seguir os conselhos do utilizador, podendo este ver os resultados da estratégia que sugeriu.<br /> <br /> A aplicação FearNot! foi desenvolvida no âmbito do projecto eCIRCUS e será futuramente distribuída em código aberto. Actualmente existem versões para o ambiente educativo Inglês e Alemão.<br /> <br /> Neste trabalho pretende-se fazer a localização para Português da aplicação. Para isso é necessário realizar dois tipos de transformação dos parâmetros que personalizam o locutor:<br /> <br /> * Conversão espectral – que altera a realização acústica dos segmentos fonéticos.<br /> * Conversão prosódica – que modifica a duração e entoação dos segmentos fonéticos. <br /> <br /> Para realizar estas transformações é necessário definir um algoritmo de mapeamento entre as realizações dos dois locutores. Neste trabalho pretende-se usar o algoritmo GMM (Gaussian Mixture Model) proposto por Stylianou [1]. He has been a lecturer at this University since 1985 and he has taught courses on circuit theory, signal theory, signal processing and speech processing to both Electrical Engineering and Computer Science students. From 1991 through 1993, he worked at AT&amp;T Bell Laboratories, Murray Hill, New Jersey on modelling and analysis of the glottal flow and its applications to text-to-speech synthesis. He is currently a senior researcher in the Spoken Language Systems Laboratory of [http://www.inesc-id.pt/ INESC-ID], and his research interests include speech synthesis, automatic multi-level speech annotation, voice source modelling, emotional speech synthesis and alternative and augmentative communication.
