Joao Paulo Carvalho has a PhD (2002) and MsC (1996) degrees from Instituto Superior Técnico, University of Lisbon, Portugal, where he is currently a Tenured Associate Professor at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computation. He has taught courses on Computational Intelligence, Distributed Systems, Computer Architectures and Digital Circuits since 1998. He is also a senior researcher at L2F – Spoken Language Systems Laboratory, INESC-ID Lisboa, where he has coordinated 6 nationally funded research projects (3 as the main project leader) and has been involved as a member in over a dozen national and European projects.
His current main research interest involves applying Computational Intelligence techniques in social webs, data mining, speech and natural language processing and Earth sciences.
He has authored over 100 papers in international scientific Journals, book chapters and peer-reviewed conferences. He is associate editor in 3 international perr reviewd journals, was program co-chair and organizer of IFSA-EUSFLAT 2009, webchair for IEEE-WCCI 2010, Public Relations Co-chair of IEEE-WCCI 2018, Publicity Chair of Fuzz-IEEE2015 and Fuzz-IEEE2017, Program Chair of IPMU2016, and program committee member of the most prestigiousl conferences in the area of computational intelligence.
