The Interactive Intelligent Systems research line brought together people from various groups to explore multimodal interaction models in virtual environments by using interfaces based on synergic recognition of multiple modalities, and create intelligent agents and synthetic characters that can interact with users in a natural way, inspired in the way humans interact with each other.

Its mission was to bridge the gap between natural spoken language and the underlying semantic information. It had as main objectives to explore multimodal interaction models in virtual environments by using interfaces based on synergic recognition of multiple modalities; to create intelligent agents and synthetic characters that can interact with users in a natural way, inspired in the way humans interact with each other; to bridge the gap between natural spoken language and the underlying semantic information; to create and develop new architectures of cooperative virtual environments; and to develop innovative applications in areas such as games, health, and learning environments.

In 2020, following INESC-ID's restructuring into scientific areas, this research line was closed.
