The Data Management and Information Retrieval group aims at the research and development of state-of-the-art solutions for processing and extracting information from large volumes of data.

Our work can be applied in areas such as cleaning and quality enhancement of stored data, information retrieval and organization, multimedia data storage and retrieval, database tuning and optimization, among others.

Group members are currently involved in research projects concerning

  • Implementation and formalization of data cleaning operations
  • Information search and retrieval from large textual collections
  • Automatic document classification
  • Cleaning and fusion of XML data
  • Storage and retrieval of images in large databases

Our mission is to develop practical solutions for current and pressing problems in data management and information retrieval, to promote the advancement of science by performing quality research and divulging its results, and to contribute to the academic community by providing an excellent working environment to new researchers and graduate students.
