Rubén Solera Ureña
From HLT@INESC-ID
Bio: Rubén Solera Ureña is an Assistant Researcher at the Human Language Technology (HLT) Laboratory at INESC–ID, Lisbon, Portugal. He received his M.Sc. degree in Telecommunications Engineering in 2004 and his Ph.D. degree in Multimedia and Communications in 2011, both from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, Spain. From 2003 to 2014 he held several teaching and research positions at the Department of Signal Theory and Communications, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where he conducted research mainly focused on machine learning techniques with applications to speech and audio processing and automatic speech recognition. He also supervised several BSc and MSc theses and lectured on a variety of Master and Bachelor degree topics in Telecommunications Engineering and Computer Science. In May 2015, Rubén Solera Ureña joined INESC–ID as a Post-doctoral Researcher responsible for speech interactions between humans and robotic agents on project INSIDE, which explored symbiotic interactions between children with Autism Spectrum Disorder and robots used for therapeutical purposes. Since then, he has also conducted research on various topics in computational paralinguistics, including automatic personality perception from speech, affective computing, automatic assessment of Parkinson’s disease medication state, and COVID-19 detection from coughs. Since October 2023, he has held an Assistant Researcher position at the Portuguese national project Accelerat.AI, funded by the Portuguese Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and NextGenerationEU European Union funds. This project aims to develop disruptive solutions based on conversational artificial intelligence agents and CCaaS (Contact Centre as a Service) to foster efficient interaction between public/private entities and customers/citizens. Rubén Solera Ureña is currently involved in the development of state-of-the-art automatic speech recognition systems for Portuguese and conducts research on various topics in computational paralinguistics. In addition, he supports project management activities by assisting the Principal Investigator in defining, planning, and monitoring of research activities; coordinating and supervising the research team; supervising financial management and budgeting; contributing to the preparation of technical and financial project deliverables; and representing the INESC–ID team at regular project consortium follow-up meetings. His current research interests include applications of signal processing and machine learning/deep learning techniques to real-life problems in the fields of speech processing, automatic speech recognition and computational paralinguistics. To date, Rubén Solera Ureña has participated in 17 competitive research projects and industry-funded contracts and has co-authored 21 publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences.
