INESC ID's Spoken Language Systems Laboratory (L²F - Laboratório de sistemas de Língua Falada) was created in January 2001, bringing together several research groups which could potentially add relevant contributions to the area of computational processing of spoken language for Portuguese. This strongly interdisciplinary group is actively involved in many areas of spoken language research and development, including speech recognition, speech synthesis, speech coding, speech understanding, audio indexing, multimodal dialogue systems, language and dialect identification, and speech-to-speech machine translation, among others, combined with expertise in many core areas of Natural Language Processing. Its work has been internationally recognized through close cooperation with other research centers in Europe and in the United States, as well as through the recent organization of INTERSPEECH'2005 |
The Tecnovoz Project dissemination session took place at the Lisbon International Fair Meeting Center, Parque das Nações. The session presented the state of the art of speech technologies, a perspective of their future applications, and an analysis of the impact of technological inovation on the Portuguese economy.

Research Opportunities - The Spoken Language Systems Lab is looking for students interested in pursuing a PhD in Language Technologies. Post-Doc positions are also open. The typical PhD program in our lab is held in cooperation with international Universities (currently with Univ. Rochester, New York University, University of Pennsylvania). Cooperations are being established with École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne and CMU. Ph.D. Program CMU-PORTUGAL in the area of Language and Information Technologies |
