Fernando Batista received the Licenciado degree in Mathematics and Computer Sciences from [http://www.ubi.pt/ Universidade da Beira Interior] (UBI), in 1997. He received the Mestre degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from [http://www.ist.utl.pt/ Instituto Superior Técnico] (IST) of the Technical University of Lisbon, in 2003, and received his PhD in Computer Science and Engineering also from IST, in 2011.
Fernando Batista received his PhD (2011) in Computer Science and Engineering from [http://www.ist.utl.pt/ Instituto Superior Técnico] (IST). He is currently Associate Professor at [http://www.iscte.pt Iscte] - University Institute of Lisbon, and a researcher at [http://www.inesc-id.pt/ INESC-ID], Lisbon. He was President of the Pedagogical Council of ISCTE-IUL (2017-2019), member of the Permanent Committee of the Pedagogical Council of ISCTE-IUL (2015-2017), and member of the Pedagogical Committee of the ISTA School (2015-2017). He participated in several European and National projects, and coordinated the INESC-ID team in the SpeDial project (2014-2015). His current research focuses on spoken and written Natural Language Processing, Machine Learning, and Text Mining for social media. Member of the organisation team of the Lisbon Machine Learning Summer School (LXMLS) from 2016 to 2021; and he was also member of the LxMLS technical staff between 2011 and 2015. He was the editorial co-chair of PROPOR 2020, editorial chair of EAMT 2020, web chair of the IPMU 2020, co-chair of the Human-Human languages track of SLATE 2019, co-chair of the demos session in PROPOR 2018, publication chair of IberSPEECH 2016, co-chair of the PROPOR 2016 Student Workshop, publication chair of IberSPEECH 2016, co-chair of the PROPOR 2016 Student Workshop, and handbook chair of EMNLP 2015. He was member of the Program Committee of several national and international conferences. He is Senior Member of the [http://www.ieee.org/ IEEE], and member of the [http://www.isca-speech.org/ ISCA] Speech.
 
From 1997 to 2000, he started his teaching experience as monitor at IST (on Introduction to Programming and Informatics). Since 2000, he has been lecturer at the Lisbon University Institute ([http://www.iscte-iul.pt/ ISCTE-IUL]), teaching courses on Computer architecture, Operating Systems, Introduction to Programming, Computer Science, and Applied Computer Sciences. He was a researcher at INESC, from 1996 to 2000, in the Natural Language Processing Group, participating in several European and National projects, such: as LE-PAROLE, LE-SIMPLE, and Hypermuseum. In 2001 he became a member of the Spoken Language Systems Lab (L²F) of [http://www.inesc-id.pt/ INESC-ID]. His Master thesis was on the area of syntactic analysis, working to process real texts. His PhD thesis was on the area of speech processing, particularly, in Rich Transcription, working to generate readable transcriptions of speech by automatic recovering punctuation and capitalization information.  
His current research interests include Rich Transcription, machine learning techniques, and the integration of different fields of natural language processing.
He is a member of the [http://www.ieee.org/ Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers] (IEEE), the [http://www.isca-speech.org/ International Speech Communication Association]  (ISCA), and [http://www.aclweb.org Association for Computational Linguistics] (ACL).

Fernando Batista received his PhD (2011) in Computer Science and Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico (IST). He is currently Associate Professor at Iscte - University Institute of Lisbon, and a researcher at INESC-ID, Lisbon.
