Being among the 10 major world languages in terms of first-language speakers means that Portuguese is spoken in many different varieties across Europe, South America, Africa and Asia.
L2F has been investing in this area, mostly in terms of Brazilian/European Portuguese studies [Trancoso 2005], but more recently we have extended our studies to encompass African varieties (Angola and Guiné Bissau), in the scope of a project on processing audiobooks.
