Received her BA, Masters and PhD degrees in Linguistics from the Universidade de Lisboa (1991), Universidade Nova de Lisboa (1998), and Universidade do Porto (2009), respectively. Doctoral and post-doctoral research was also developed at New York University, at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences. Extensive experience in both the academic and the corporate sectors, with various international and multidisciplinary responsibilities. In several occasions, collaborated with the Portuguese National Scientific Computing Foundation FCCN providing linguistic services for the Linguateca project, participated in joint evaluation tasks, and served as an independent expert for the European Commission on the evaluation of proposals submitted to European research and innovation funding programs on language technology (FP7, H2020). Senior roles as an independent consultant, a language teacher, a translator/interpreter between English and Portuguese, and an entrepreneur in distinct fields (home improvement, automotive wholesale, and language industries). Research career in computational linguistics started at INESC’s Natural Language Group (1993–1995). During this 3-year period at INESC, was a consultant for Logos Corporation, a US-based pioneer machine translation company, and then converted to a full-time employee (1995–2001). At Logos, she worked on the English-Portuguese, Italian and Spanish systems, and performed collateral tasks, such as linguistic quality assurance. The research focuses on the development and evaluation of linguistic resources for automated text processing and machine translation, having specialized in the latest years in automated paraphrasing and their application to authoring aids, text production and revision, language learning, language variety conversion, cross-language tasks, multilingualism, and stylistics. Current experience includes exploiting open source resources (namely OpenLogos) to create new linguistically enhanced natural language processing applications. Management Committee member of the enetCollect and Multi3Generation COST Actions, Action Chair of the latest. Currently works at INESC-ID as a researcher in the Human Language Technologies Lab, especially dedicated to the development of the eSPERTo paraphrasing system (partially funded by FCT), to be used in applications such as language learning, translation, question-answering, summarization, among others.
